South Dublin County Council in conjunction with Dublin City Council and the Office of Public Works are pleased to announce a significant milestone in the River Poddle Flood Alleviation Scheme with the recent completion of approximately 230m of raised embankments and the completion of the flow control weir at the Tymon Park Lakes, allowing the impoundment flood protection asset to commence operation from February 20th.

The principal solution for the scheme, this consists of upstream flood storage in Tymon Park which restricts flow downstream during high storm events by increasing the volume of water held in the main Tymon Lake at Limekiln until the peak flow from the storm has passed.

The increase in storage volume is achieved by raising the existing lake embankment levels at the eastern end and replacing the existing weir in the lake with a flow control structure. The flow control structure consists of a weir to maintain existing lake level which flows into a 30m long culvert. When the flow over the weir reaches the maximum allowable flow, the culvert restricts any further increase from the lake and the lake level begins to rise. Once flow decreases the level in the lake drops back to the weir level. The flood attenuation allows for the lake level to rise as much as 3m during the design flood event of a 1 in 100 year Flood (1% AEP).

With this flood asset becoming operational, this will provide instant flood protection to properties downstream in future heavy rainfall events.

In March 2018, South Dublin County Council appointed Nicholas O’Dwyer Ltd as technical consultants and to prepare environmentally sustainable designs for a flood relief solution for the River Poddle. Planning consent was achieved in June 2023 with OPW Direct Labour works commencing on site in April 2024.

Further works on the scheme have now commenced in the Wainsfort and Ravensdale areas with all works on the scheme currently estimated to be completed by Q3 2027.
